"Fair Game," with Doug Liman on Hollywood & the CIA

The CIA figures prominently in several of director Doug Liman's movies, as well as his TV series Covert Affairs. Join us for a screening of Fair Game, a taut and gripping docudrama, based on events in the lives of CIA operative Valerie Plame and her husband Joe Wilson, a former career diplomat. When Wilson was sent to Niger by the CIA to verify White House claims that the African state of Niger had been selling yellowcake to Iraq, he concluded the intelligence was false. When he dared to challenge publicly the Bush administration's facts, his wife was outed as a spy and her identity leaked to a Washington Post columnist. The movie focuses on the couple's struggle to save their careers, reputations and marriage.

Healthy Monday Expands Ad/PR Network to Reach CCNY Students and Harlem Community

NEW YORK, NY, December 1, 2010 - Healthy Monday (www.healthymonday.org), a non-profit that raises awareness about the importance of one’s health, has enlisted support from advertising and public relations students at The City College of New York to promote their anti smoking and diabetes free campaign.

Triumph Innovation Consulting (TIC) consists of seven junior Ad/PR executives, including Jorge Leger, Linda Perez, Ronald Pogyo, Kristina Henry, Ana Stanisic, Shakeima Cooks, and Laetitia Loco. All have been working very hard to find the best way to get the Harlem Community to change its behavior. This includes beginning the week off with a fresh start by eating healthy, or not smoking. It also urges students and residents to “Choose Monday” as the best day to get a healthy start.

TIC will hold their first Healthy Monday event December 6, 2010, 12 noon – 2 pm, at the CCNY's North Academic Center (NAC) Rotunda; 160 Convent Avenue at 138th Street. Participants will receive information and practical advice on how to avoid the deterioration of one’s health.

The agency will have guest speakers such as Ms. Eugenia Graham, a coordinator manager from Harlem Hospital's Quit Smoking program who will talk about the cons of smoking and how to successfully quit this addiction. A selection of healthy foods will be served to show how eating healthy is not difficult. There will also be prizes for students, faculty and staff with the most knowledge about diabetes and smoking issues.

“Triumph Innovation Consulting has completed detailed research on the Harlem community," according to Jorge Leger, CEO of TIC. "CCNY students have discovered people face certain struggles when it comes to eating healthy," he notes.

To assist with these personal health struggles, more than 55 schools, colleges and universities have joined the "Healthy Monday" campaign. TIC has developed an integrated public relations and advertising campaign to address smoking and diabetes, which afflict Harlemites in large numbers.

TIC was formed as a part of the Advertising/PR Workshop at CCNY. The course objective is to create an advertising and PR campaign for the client that builds awareness for the Healthy Monday message. Each skilled team member has a great passion for the advertising and PR fields, coupled with an enormous desire and motivation to win the competition as a “real world” capstone to their college experience.

Healthy Monday is a non-profit public health organization founded in 2005 in association with Johns Hopkins University, Columbia University and Syracuse University. Rubenstein Communications :: Winter/Spring 2011 Internships Supporting 10th Anniversary of Tribeca Film Festival

(www.rubenstein.com) is a privately-held public relations firm in New York City, offering strategic, results-oriented publicity and media relations in a wide variety of sectors. With over 450 clients, we represent a diverse clientele, including educational and cultural institutions, media and entertainment companies, not-for-profit organizations, health care providers, law firms, real estate concerns, global corporations, business executives and public figures.

We seek 10-12 student interns for the winter/spring semester (February-May 2011) to support publicity efforts for the Tribeca Film Festival. 2011 SUMMER FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

The IRTS Summer Fellowship Program teaches up-and-coming communicators the realities of the media industry and business world through a nine-week , expense-paid fellowship, which includes practical experience and career-planning advice. Fellows gain full-time, "real world" experience at New York-based media companies. In addition, the Fellowship provides the opportunity to network with industry professionals, take related field trips, and attend panels, lectures and group discussions.
ELIGIBILITY:
The Summer Fellowship Program is competitive. Students must be college juniors, seniors or graduate students at the time of application. For detailed eligibility information, log on to our website www.irts.org and follow the link to "College Programs."

May 2010 Ad/PR Grad Millana Williams won the model segment of Project Runway.. On Oct. 28, she won a fashion spread in Marie Claire magazine, L'Oreal products and prizes valued at $25,000!

Originally from Texas, Millana completed an extensive internship with Uptown Magazine and is excited about combining her passion for the fashion world and communications/business skills honed at CCNY.

Project Runway, which runs on Lifetime Television, features host and supermodel Heidi Klum, fashion mentor Tim Gunn, designer Michael Kors and Nina Garcia, fashion director of Marie Claire magazine who all weigh-in, offering advice to the 17 designers who competed in this season's competition. Gretchen Jones won the "Season 8" designer segment of the competition.

You may have received an e-mail regarding the application for the 4A’s 2011 Multicultural Advertising Intern Program (MAIP) which is now available on the 4A’s website. MAIP offers an invaluable opportunity to the most promising multicultural students by providing them a chance to prove their ability in the real world through a paid 10-week summer internship at an advertising agency.

Last year, we placed 133 interns in 50 of our member agencies. Many of our MAIP interns received offers for full-time employment as a result of the extensive training and experience they gained through the program. This year, we hope to place well over 100 interns at our member advertising agencies.

Educators, like you, are the most valuable partners we look to in terms of finding qualified applicants for MAIP. We need your assistance in identifying the "best and brightest" on your campus and making them aware of this opportunity.

We offer opportunities to students who are motivated and eager to
learn about broadcast journalism and gain valuable experience in a
newsroom environment. The following departments are looking for
interns who will help plan, execute and coordinate various aspects of
news media.

EDITORIAL INTERNS
• General News: Interns will work with assignment editors,
photographers and news producers as they gather, research, write and
produce the local news of the day. This internship is split between
work in the field and the newsroom.
• Local Edition: Interns will work with NY1’s Queens, Staten Island
and Bergen County, NJ reporters and anchors to produce local stories.
These positions offer a mix of time in the newsroom and in the field.
• NY1 Noticias: Interns will work with NY1 Noticias’ reporters,
producers and writers to produce our Spanish language news channel.
These positions offer a mix of time in the newsroom and in the field.
Must be bi-lingual.
• One on 1 with Budd Mishkin: Intern will research guests, prepare
transcripts from interviews, participate in field shoots, and collect
archival material for use in packages. Interns who demonstrate
exceptional initiative and skill will have the opportunity to propose
potential subjects to be profiled.
• Education: Intern will work with NY1’s Education reporter helping
to write, research, shoot and produce local education stories.
• Political Unit: Interns will work with the political team
(producers, reporters and writers) to produce NY1’s nightly political
program Inside City Hall. • NY1.com: Intern will work with the New
Media team to write headlines, develop content, edit copy and create
multimedia stories. There will also be opportunities to get hands-on
experience creating photos and video for web and use social media
tools like Twitter and Facebook to reach out to our viewers.
• Living Unit: Interns will work with reporters and producers who
research, shoot and write NY1’s feature reports (including Arts,
Health & Fitness, On Stage, Technology Report and Money Matters) and
long-form special programming.
• Sports: Interns will log sporting events, edit highlights, assist
in the control room during live shows, attend sporting events and
assist shooters in the field. • The Call: Interns will conduct “man on
the street” interviews (with photographer), screen, log, and edit the
interviews into sound bites, edit video clips, sort anchor scripts,
run TelePrompter during production, and participate in editorial
decisions for our live nightly call-in show.
• Rail and Road: Intern will assist our traffic reporters in putting
together their live reports during rush hour. • NY1 for You: Interns
will assist producer and reporter on shoots, interview subjects, pitch
story ideas, and research investigative and consumer stories.

TECHNICAL INTERNS
• Video Editing: Interns will shadow video editors learning every
angel of the job. Depending on skill level, interns may have the
opportunity to edit reporter packages for air.
• Technical Operations: Interns will mix audio, set up studio sets,
operate robotic cameras and still store, call up teleprompter scripts,
and provide lighting support.
• ENG: Interns will work with the ENG Assistants to organize and
maintain the cameras and other support gear for the field crews. They
will also occasionally work to support field crews and live trucks on
remote shoots. Creative Department Interns
• Creative Services (promotions/marketing/public relations): Interns
will assist producers with production of promotions, screen promotion
footage and graphic elements, and occasionally accompany producers on
shoots. Interns will also work on the NY1 Community Calendar and
assist with clerical duties as needed.
• Graphics: Interns will learn how to create and produce various
on-air graphics using Photoshop, Illustrator and After Effects.

TAPE LIBRARY / HUMAN RESOURCES
• Tape Librarian: Intern will assist with classifying, cataloging and
maintaining library of video tapes, DVDs and digital files;
transferring footage to various formats for tape sales and licensing;
and filing tapes according to the in-house shelving system.
• HR: Intern will assist in updating job descriptions and sorting
resumes, organize filing of recruitment documents, compile and input
employment statistics, facilitate HR events (orientation, site visits,
intern activities), and examine organizations, schools, and agencies
that would assist recruitment efforts.

QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates for internships MUST:
• Receive academic credits for the internship.
• Have strong interpersonal, verbal/written communication skills,
leadership and organizational abilities.
• Maintain a professional appearance, be enthusiastic, and have a
demonstrated interest in journalism and news.
• Be able to commit to approximately 16 hours per week.
• Coursework or previous internship experience in communications,
journalism or related field is preferred.

perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed
are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Ad/PR Majors Sweep NYC Police Foundation Competition

Kyle Witmer and Marta Froncvillar won first place for their "Change the Future" print campaign, part of a Spring '10 New York City Police Foundation advertising contest. They split a $2,000 first place prize in recognition of their outstanding work.

The campaign was selected among entries submitted by students from Pratt Institute, Parsons The New School for Design, and The City College of New York. The competition was stiff!

Under the direction of Prof. Nancy Tag, MCA Ad/PR majors snared second and third place honors as well, in partnership with students from CCNY's Electronic Design & Multimedia major. All will be honored this fall at a Police Foundation gala!

The Software Training Center (STC) was initiated in fall 2003 by the Student Technology Intern Program (STIP) to offer FREE software training to all CCNY students. Are you concerned with the issues facing your community? Do you want to learn more about your community and affect change? Do you think CCNY students should be more involved in the New York City community?

Apply for a Community Engagement Fellowship to receive a $3,000.00 scholarship and leadership development opportunities.

The Colin Powell Center’s Community Engagement Fellowship Program seeks students who are involved in their communities, value awareness of community concerns and hope to advocate for positive change through on-going work with community organizations and/or leaders.

Community Engagement Fellowships are awarded to City College undergraduate students who, in partnership with community organizations or leaders, design and carry out projects that address communityneeds in a sustainable way. Preference will be given to projects that address any of the Powell Center’s priority areas: International Development and Security, Community and Economic Development, Education, Health and Health Care and the Environment.

Fellowships can support a variety of student-led initiatives:

 Launch a new campaign at CCNY in partnership with a local community organization

 Use your project or community partnership to educate, involve and collaborate with other CCNY students or clubs

 Connect a service project to a class you are taking or a course of study in which you are interested

 Serve at a community organization and share information with the CCNY community through informative workshops

 Fundraise for an organization and advocate awareness of the issues that the organization addresses

 Launch a new service initiative from a club in which you are involved

 Start a CCNY chapter of a national non-profit organization

 Other projects that involve the CCNY community and address community needs in a sustainable way

Community Engagement Fellows receive an initial scholarship of $3,000 and may request up to $1,500 in the second or third year of the project. Fellows are also given access to extensive leadership development programming.

You are encouraged to ask questions and discuss your ideas in advance of sending in your application. We can help you connect with community partner organizations for your project, if you don’t already have those connections. Applications for the Colin Powell Center's Community Engagement Fellowships should include the following:

1. Cover sheet with (1) student’s name, (2) proposal title, (3) number of credits completed, (4) estimated number of semesters remaining at City College, (5) student’s major, (6) name of partnering organization, contact person and contact person’s email and phone, (7) student e-mail, phone numbers, and address, (8) names and contact information for two references for the student, at least one of whom should be City College faculty.

a. Project Focus: Describe the external community that the project will serve (e.g. low-income families, the elderly, the homeless etc.) or the problem that the project will address (e.g. illiteracy, hunger, the environment etc.).
b. Past Experience with Proposed Project/Issue: After describing the community or issue, explain why it is important to you and list any past work you’ve done in this area. Also, explain any way that this issue or population connects to your studies.
c. Partnerships: Discuss the partnership(s) you will create with community organizations, campus groups and the City College community. *You must plan to partner with at least one community-based organization or community leader. See (4.) below.
d. Goals & Activities (dedicate one to two pages to section (d.))
Civic Engagement Fellowships must include both education and action components. Educationincludes educating and raising awareness about the issue you are addressing. Action includes the direct services you might undertake to address the issue. Describe your goals and activities in each area.

Education and Awareness-Raising
i. By the end of the year, what do you hope to teach the CCNY community?
ii. What resources/sources of information will you use to inform yourself and others about your issue?
iii. What activities will you do to inform the CCNY community about the issue(s) your project addresses? Please include a specific timeline for your self-education and examples of activities you will conduct to raise awareness on campus and/or in the local community.

Action and Direct Service
i. By the end of the year, what will your actions have accomplished at City College or in the surrounding New York City community as a result of your project?
ii. What direct service work will you and others do through your project? Your activities should address the root causes and/or symptoms of the issue you are focused on. These activities should respond to needs identified by your community partner. Please include a specific timeline for service, activities, events and action you will take throughout the year.
iii. How will you recruit other students or groups to get involved?

e. Plan to Sustain Your Project in the Future: Please address each of the following:
i. What might your efforts look like one and five years from now?
ii. What will you do to ensure that the partnership with your community organization will continue?
iii. How will you recruit, mentor and support community members and/or CCNY students to take over the project so that it continues to operate in the future?
iv. What are the challenges you foresee in making this project sustainable?

f. Personal Strengths: What personal strengths and qualities will assist you in making this project successful this year and in the future?
g. Budget: If awarded the fellowship, $3,000 is distributed to your student account through the bursar’s office. How will you use these funds to further your education and/or support your project? Also, please include a general outline of estimated revenues and expenses of your project (fundraisers, events, transportation, etc.)

3. Two recommendation letters: These should be submitted in sealed envelopes with your application, and the recommender should sign across the seal of the recommendation envelope. One of the letters should be written by a CCNY faculty or staff member.

4. Confirmation of Partnership: Include a letter or copy of an e-mail from a representative of the off-campus organization that confirms their interest in working with you on your project.

Prof. Michael Cramer Debuts Medieval Fantasy as Performance

This week marks the official publication of Medieval Fantasy as Performance: The Society for Creative Anachronism and the Current Middle Ages, by CCNY’s own Prof. Michael A. Cramer (Scarecrow Press, Inc. - Feb. 16, 2010).

In addition to teaching Intro to Media Studies at CCNY, he’s also a professor at Borough of Manhattan Community College. As per his Amazon.com author page:

Michael Cramer was born in Gold Beach, Oregon in 1964 (he often says that he was born in the great state of Jefferson), and grew up in Sacramento, where he attended Jonas Salk Middle School and Encina High. He concentrated on theatre and filmmaking, and was something of a failure at band. Dr. Cramer graduated with a Ph.D. in theatre studies from the City University of New York Graduate Center in 2005. He obtained his M.A. in Drama from San Francisco State University in 1996, and his B.A. from Cal State Sacramento in 1988. In his various lives he has been a car salesman, a shoe salesman, a personal trainer, a martial artist, an actor, a singer, a teacher, a project manager, a secretary (the man can't hold down a job), a knight, and an executive at a small media company in Brooklyn. While still in high school, Cramer joined the Society for Creative Anachronism, which provided material for several articles and for his book *Medieval Fantasy as Performance: The Society for Creative Anachronism and the Current Middle Ages*.

Looking for a Spring / Summer ‘10 Internship? Follow This 7 Step Success Plan

Now is the time to start your search if you’re looking for a Spring / Summer ‘10 internship. Most “for credit” internships are for 3 credits; students usually work 12-15 hours per week, for a 15-18 week period (about 180 hours/semester).

In order to qualify, you should have completed 12-15 hours (4-5 classes) in your major. If you have completed less than 12 hours, chances are slim that the department will approve your internship request.

Understand we cannot file paperwork with the CCNY Registrar until your internship is finalized by a hiring manager. “We might hire you in January” doesn’t count; it has to be a firm internship offer. Thus, most internships may not officially be included on your schedule until the first few weeks of the Spring ’10 semester.

Your internship experience should provide “real world” insight to your field of study, such as advertising, public relations, journalism or film/video. Students are encouraged to research and fact-find to secure the right internship for their unique and special talents. The department assists you with ideas and leads—but does not do the work for you.

In the highly competitive communications field, “the hunt” is part of an exciting game. Part of “the reward” is being selected from a talent pool of many and feeling the “thrill of victory” when you land the prized internship of your dreams!

This fall, CCNY-MCA students are interning at Sony Pictures, Anderson Cooper 360, Time Warner/People Magazine, NY1 and The Plaza Hotel-Marketing, to name a few. Understand that your classmates did it—and so can you!

Our advice: Arm yourself with confidence and get your digital tools in order (resume / cover letter / writing samples / digital portfolio - if applicable) and embark on a deep dive internship search!

Follow these simple steps to get ahead of the competition:

1. Research 3-5 dream internships. Think about where you’d ideally like to work. These should be positions where you could gain experience and ultimately end up in an entry level position, if you’re diligent and play your cards right.

2. Update your resume. Add recent jobs, new skills, classes or interests. Yes, you may include informational blogs created for CCNY-MCA writing classes. Pay close attention to trends in the news and think about how you can link your unique skills to what potential employers are looking for. Since social media is all the rave, then fine-tune your resume to show what you know! Be sure your resume includes buzz words that catch the eyes of human resource associates and internship directors, i.e. wording such as --

> Passionate about social media
> As founder of www.moviemaven.blogspot.com, diligent about connections with 800+ fellow movie-enthusiasts

Note: Wording like the above would be perfect if you’re applying for a job in publicity for Warner Bros. It shows the reader/potential employer that you’re adept in online marketing tools/blogging and have an online network that could potentially buy movie tickets. Make it easy for employers to see your strengths. Show them what you bring to the table.

Get creative! Think of your resume as a business card for Brand You!

3. Prepare a cover letter/email. Remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect, but it does have to get done. Professors and associates at the CCNY Career Services (NAC 1/116) and The Writing Center (NAC) can help you fine-tune the wording.

MCA professors strongly advise that you take advantage of the many resume writing workshops offered by the career center. Understand that you hold the reigns to your future. Make sure you utilize all the wonderful tools CCNY has put at your disposal during your college years.

The Career Center also offers free job placement assistance to graduates up to one full year after graduation. Take advantage of this wonderful academic benefit and spread the word to friends who have recently graduated.

4. Email MCA Internship Advisor Prof. Lynne Scott Jackson; lynne.scottjackson@gmail.com. We’ll schedule a sit down and help you devise a personal action plan.

5. In the next few weeks, you’ll apply for internships, with the goal of locking in a position (ideally) by year end. Understand you may have to go through a series of interviews before you land something—the internship/job market is that tight.

But, you’re in perhaps the best position, because you’re young and only subway ride away from the headquarters of the planet’s leading communications companies! Never forget that. Worse case scenario, you’ll go on interviews during the winter break and land something early in the year. Think with the end in mind (your coveted internship), stay positive and keep plugging! Never give up on yourself or your professional development.

6. Once your internship is secured, we’ll file paperwork with the CCNY registrar; this usually happens during the first two weeks of the Spring ’10 semester. Note: You cannot register for your internship online and the paperwork must be filed by the MCA department (not students); the university has instituted new policies.

7. Now the real work begins. Before your first day on the job, you should learn all you can about your new employer. Ideally, you will have done that during the interview phase, but here’s an opportunity to learn even more. That way you can start to impress you supervisor from day one.

Throughout the semester, we’ll touch bases to keep you on track. Your employer will evaluate your progress and you’ll be required to write a paper reflecting on your experience. This will include what you learned on the job and a little about how you could have been better prepared for the experience.

Stay tuned … near the end of the semester we may schedule another Internship Bootcamp to share tools for success. At the start of the Fall ‘09 semester our boot camp allowed dozens of students to share resources, gain confidence and be one step ahead of the pack in deciding what internship path may be the best fit.

What's New for 2009?

Change and evolution are our hallmarks. The Thought Leadership program anchors remain, but the content will be 100% new. The Paley Center drops out of the mix in 2009 during a construction phase. Integrated campaigns take center stage as the AAAA O'Toole Awards moves into Advertising Week. NEXUS expands to two days. How do I register for Advertising Week?

There are three easy steps you'll need to take.

First, you'll need to register with Advertising Week. This involves creating a username and password and selecting one of three clearly defined event packages.
Once you're logged in you can begin signing up for events. Just go to the Events Calendar, browse through the listings and select "Sign Up" to add events your calendar. Much of the 2009 calendar is already up and you should check regularly for updates.

Hi Lynn,

I work for MCT Management in New York City, and we are looking for a few interns to help us out. I was wondering if you would be interested in taking a look at our listing and perhaps passing the world along to any of your students interested in artist management or online music marketing.

The majority of the internship will be dealing with online music marketing. We need help with promotion for our artists, so a lot of our interns spend a lot of time thinking up creative ways to get the word out there. We ask our interns to help us create new and innovative ways to develop and support our artists, as well as spending some time on various social networking sites as a tool to promote them.

Interns Needed for Tour Marketing department, Summer Semester (Starting May 15). Below are the duties. I would need someone full time. Let me know- thanks!

1) Assist with artist/executive travel, including booking air travel and hotels
2) General office management, including phone/fax, electronic communication, mailings
3) Respond to specific artist touring needs, including obtaining required equipment
4) Make sure artist riders are fulfilled as scheduled, especially with regard to conditions at concert halls
5) Facilitate artist interviews and in-store signings
6) Attend shows and other performances to make sure performance conditions are optimal

This just in from Prof. Tag, whose friend is editor of video content at the New York Times. It’s never too soon to build your personal brand and it doesn’t get much better than sending a potential employer to a link to your work on the New York Times website!

Hello All:

We just launched a video project, The New Hard Times, which features conversations between people who lived through the Great Depression and young people (grandchildren, students, nieces, neighbors) who are grappling with the economic crisis today. There are two NYT videos up on the site right now and we’re asking for user generated video — that people pick up their video cameras and record memories and lessons from grandparents, aunts and uncles, neighbors, etc who lived through the Great Depression. We’re going to be posting a third Times video on the home page in a week or two and at that point we hope to have several user videos to display along with it.

It strikes me as an excellent opportunity for students to do the project and get their work displayed on The Times website.
