PRSA-NY Art Stevens Scholarship

PUBLIC RELATIONS SCHOLARSHIP

The City College Department of Media and Communication Arts is pleased to invite students in the Advertising/PR specialization to apply for the Art Stevens
PRSA-NY/CCNY Public Relations Scholarship. The scholarship is a gift from Art Stevens, APR, Fellow, PRSA, an esteemed City College alumnus, and distinguished leader in the public relations profession and in PRSA-NY. The Scholarship is administered by the City College Fund.

The $5,000 scholarship is awarded annually in the Spring to one for MCA/Ad/ PR major at The City College of New York who meet the following criteria.

• Declared major in Advertising/PR specialization with Junior or first semester Senior status in Fall 2009.

• Demonstrated overall academic competence of 3.0 current GPA or higher with a strong academic record in the major.

• Completion of at least MCA 209, Introduction to PR, by the end of December 08.

• Evidence of serious intent to pursue a career in public relations, authenticated by faculty.

Applications should be submitted to Prof. Lynn Appelbaum, S 472A.
Deadline: Monday, March 2. Applications should include the following:

• Statement of no more than 250 words by the candidate about his/her interest in the PR profession. Information on relevant actives and PRSSA involvement is useful.
• Resume
• Letter of support from one faculty member.
• Academic Transcript
• Cover Page with your name, phone, email and name of scholarship you are applying for.

Cash Awards will be made in Spring 2009 and will be applied to City College tuition.

The Phyllis-Berlowe Scholarship was created by The Foundation of Women Executives in Public Relations (The Foundation of WEPR) in 2006 to honor one of the New York’s outstanding leaders in public relations, Phyllis Berlowe. Ms. Berlowe is remembered for her boundless energy as an advocate for the profession, for her esteemed leadership, and as a stellar practitioner.

The $4,000 scholarship is available to students in Ad/PR majors at The City College of New York, who demonstrate an outstanding academic record of achievement and financial need. Students must be either juniors or seniors in the Advertising/PR major in the 2009-10 academic year. Men and women are invited to apply.

Students are encouraged to apply only if they meet the following criteria:

• Full-time resident of Greater New York
• Have either junior or senior status in 2009-10
• Demonstrated academic excellence (3.4 or higher current GPA with a strong academic record in the major).
• Completion of at least MCA 209 and 362 OR MCA 350 by Fall 2008
• Evidence of serious intent to pursue a career in public relations, authenticated by faculty. This should include a statement by the candidate about his/her interest in the profession, and letter of support from the faculty. Information on relevant extracurricular activities and internships will be especially useful.
• Evidence of financial need for the scholarship.

Eligible students should submit 1) a 250-word essay on their interest in public relations as a career and statement of need. Students may discuss any aspect of their education, professional experience, or career aspirations, 2) Academic transcript 3) Resume, 4) Letter of support by faculty member.

The Foundation of WEPR is offering a $2,000 Helen Ostrowski Scholarship for International Students majoring in the Media and Communication Arts in the PR/Advertising Specialization at The City College of New York for the 2009-10 academic year. Men and women are welcome to apply.

Students are encouraged to apply if they meet the following criteria:

• Have international status

• Demonstrated academic competence (3.0 or higher current GPA).

• Have completed at least MCA 209 by Fall 2008 and must be either Juniors or Seniors in 2009-10.

• Show evidence of serious intent to pursue a career in public relations, authenticated by faculty.

Ketchum Fellowship Program

Ketchum’s New York office is now accepting applications for our 10 week 2009 Summer Fellowship Program. This is a paid fellowship, now open to current juniors and seniors. This program starts on June 1, 2009 and ends on August 7, 2009. Students must be available for the entire 10 weeks to be considered.

Ketchum Summer Fellows work hand in hand with practices to learn the business, serve clients, and develop PR skills. They will assist with project research, writing and media relations efforts to support client programs.

Fellowships will also be available in our specialty areas which include Creative, Interactive, New Media and Research groups. Those seniors who demonstrate our core competencies and Ketchum values at the end of the program will have the opportunity to interview for a full-time position as an Account Associate.

Duties vary between account teams but general responsibilities include:

• Develop and maintain media lists
• Event coordination
• Monitor and track media and write media updates
• Prepare pitch letters and pitch media
• Assist in the development of press materials including fact sheets and backgrounders
• Attend client and team meetings as well as internal meetings and agency events
• Assist with research for new business opportunities and client presentations
• Participate in brainstorms

The summer will end with a final project presentation based on a client need. Fellows will work in teams and present to the New York office. All applications need to come through the website, www.ketchum.com, as there will be specific questions to obtain writing samples from the applicants.

Music Internships

Unique Music Industry Internship Available Immediately

Legal Music, LLC, a revolutionary new music industry web company is searching for motivated and creative interns.

These intern positions are appropriate for students studying Music Business, Web Marketing and Design and Event Management programs. The internship will last up to eight weeks. It will provide the students with a $200 stipend and college credits.
Students participating in the program will learn experientially various aspects of the music, internet and events industries. Intern projects will include: web based interaction with artists and bands; market research of music industry web trends; marketing and promotional activities at music venues and events; and much more. Interns will learn promotional and production skills as they help create and hone efficient and effective online methods for promoting the music industry.
